Editorial

It is our pleasure to present the first issue of the Journal of Molecular Endocrinology. We aim to make the new journal a major front-line high quality international publication for papers on molecular aspects of cellular function in endocrine and related systems. Clearly the expansion of our knowledge of molecular mechanisms, deriving inter alia from technological advances in molecular biology and from a clearer understanding of receptor structure and function and intracellular signalling systems, is having a major impact upon endocrinology at all levels. Furthermore, the demonstration of paracrine and autocrine systems in many tissues is forcing a re-examination of many of the basic concepts of endocrinology. Indeed many substances not previously considered to be hormones are being found to subserve a 'hormonal' or 'extracellular messenger' role. Thus molecular endocrinology now embraces the mechanisms involved with the synthesis, processing, release and action of a wide variety of substances including growth
